Ayna gibi düzgün ve parlak yüzeyleri kullanarak ışığın yansımasını daha iyi gözlemleyebilirsiniz. Yandaki fotoğrafta görülen çocuklar, el fenerinin aynadan yansıyan ışığını kullanarak saati aydın­latmaktadır. Saatin yeri değişirse ışığın saati tekrar aydınlatması için çocukların ne yapması gerekir?

Işık kaynağından bir yüzeye gönderilen ışık ışı­nına gelen ışın, yüzeye çarptıktan sonra geldiği ortama geri dönen ışık ışınına yansıyan ışın den­diğini öğrendiniz.

Aşağıdaki şekilde, bir yüzeye gelen ve yansıyan ışınlar ve bu ışınların normalle yaptıkları açılar gösterilmiştir. Normal, ışınların gelme ve yansıma açılarını ölçmede referans alınan ve yüzeye dik, sanal bir doğru parçasıdır. Gelen ışının yüzeye değdiği noktaya dik olarak çizilir. Işığın çarptığı ve yansıdığı yüzeyin altındaki taranmış alan, yüzeyin ışığı geçirmeyen bir madde olduğunu gösterir.

Yukarıda sözü edilen çocuk­lar, yaptıkları uygulamada saatin yeri değişirse onu tekrar aydınlatabilmek için aynaya gelen ışığın doğrultusunu değiştirmelidirler. Işığın doğrultusunun değişmesi, aynaya gelme açı­sının değişmesi anlamına gelir. Gelme açısı değişen ışığın buna bağlı olarak yansıma açısı da değişecektir.
